Tummy Tuck & Liposuction

If you have experienced pregnancies or repeated weight loss and your stomach has lost elasticity in its skin texture as well as muscle tone, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) from our practice can help.

Dr. Daniel Del Vecchio presents at national and international plastic surgery meetings on the topic of body contouring including tummy tucks, or abdominoplasty, and can help restore a shapelier, slimmer profile to your body.

To learn more about how abdominoplasty can make a difference for you, please don’t hesitate to request a consultation online. Dr. Del Vecchio, a board-certified plastic surgeon with almost 30 years of experience, has the right combination of skills and expertise to give you the look that you deserve.

Am I a Candidate?

A tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and tightens the muscles in the abdominal wall. Often, Dr. Del Vecchio performs abdominoplasty in conjunction with some element of liposuction for superior results.

Tummy tuck candidates are most satisfied with their results when they are in relatively good shape but have large fat deposits or loose abdominal skin that won't respond to diet or exercise. The surgery is particularly helpful if you have stretched your abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where it can shrink back due to pregnancies or weight loss.

You should maintain a stable weight for several months prior to your procedure to achieve optimal results. Additionally, Dr. Del Vecchio suggests that you wait until you are done having children before you have a tummy tuck. A subsequent pregnancy may cause the muscles tightened during abdominoplasty to separate again.

Depending on your individual needs, you may achieve positive results with a partial or mini tummy tuck. In general, Dr. Del Vecchio believes a mini tummy tuck can be a better solution if your stubborn areas are located in the lower abdominal wall only. You may be a candidate for the mini tummy tuck if you have a small pouch below your belly button and do not have a lot of stretch marks, sagging skin, or a hooded belly button. A mini tummy tuck is generally not as extensive and the surgery and recovery period are typically shorter than a full tummy tuck. Dr. Del Vecchio will be able to decide which approach will work best for you.

Dr. Del Vecchio will work closely with you to ensure open communication about your expectations for the procedure. About Your Procedure

During your abdominoplasty, Dr. Del Vecchio will smooth out your stomach muscles by placing a horizontal incision that will span from your hip to hip just above the pubic area. To tighten the abdominal wall, Dr. Del Vecchio will bring together the loose muscles in the midline, suturing them together. Next, Dr. Del Vecchio will remove excess skin downward and then close the incision as low as possible in the bikini line. The goal is that this will give you a firmer, flatter abdomen and a narrower waistline. Depending on the amount of skin that remains after the tummy tuck procedure has been performed, your navel may also need to be repositioned. Dr. Del Vecchio will create a small incision for a new opening for the belly button, which he will then suture into place.

Recovery and Results

After your surgery, you can expect to feel tired and sore for a few days. Dr. Del Vecchio can provide prescription pain medication as needed. Many of our patients are able to return to work within a week or two of surgery depending on the level of physical activity at their job. Make sure to discuss your recovery and back-to-work timeline with Dr. Del Vecchio prior to surgery, and don’t hesitate to call if you do have any post-operative questions.
